  Nutrition 101 - Special Considerations - Rodents - Gerbils

Gerbils are social, burrowing animals, which are generally friendly and easily handled. Gerbils are also virtually odor free due to their water conserving mechanisms, which result in only a few drops of urine being expressed each day. The average life span is between 3-4 years and can be housed in the same manner as hamsters. Gerbils do not tolerate high temperatures (above 85°F) and their coats will appear greasy with high humidity.

It is uncommon for gerbils to have nutritional inadequacies if maintained on a commercial diet, however, excessive amounts of such things as sunflower seeds can result in high cholesterol and fatty deposits throughout the body. Weanling gerbils are susceptible to dehydration and malnutrition because of poor accessibility to food and water. Generally, gerbils will eat frequent small meals and for this reason, should be fed free choice. Clean water in a sipper bottle should be provided at all times.
